1. Find some ancient shark teeth. Topsail Island is a hot spot for finding shark teeth. It’s incredible, really. I grew up going to South Carolina beaches every summer and remember finding my first ever on Hilton Head Island when I was a pre-teen…and trust me, I looked! Once I moved to North Topsail Beach, I found it was nearly impossible to walk along the beach without stumbling across a handful. We’ve lived here for about seven years now and, although we haven’t snagged a Megalodon tooth yet, we have quite the collection. Hit the beach 1-2 hours before low tide for the best shark tooth hunting. While we’re talking sharks…if you happen to have a rainy day during your stay, consider making the 1.5h drive to the Aurora Fossil Museum!
2. Visit Ecological Marine Adventures. Located right in the center of the island, Ecological Marine Adventures is a fun and educational way for your kids to connect with the coast. From their touch tank aquarium to summertime ghost crab hunts and immersive programs, your kiddos are guaranteed to make lasting memories.
3. Take a Day Trip to one of North Carolina’s State Parks. Carolina Beach State Park and Hammocks Beach State Park are both a quick drive from Topsail Island. With beautiful trail systems, camp grounds, and a ferry service to Bear Island, it’s the perfect way engage in some outdoor adventure.
4. Spend the day in Historic Downtown Wilmington. From amazing dining options, historic architecture, the battleship, and museums + galleries galore, there is no shortage of things to do in Wilmington. If your crew is a bit younger like mine and the downtown stretch feels overwhelming, there are some more toddler friendly options with room to roam. Consider walking through Airlie Gardens where they have a butterfly house open from June through the end of September. Catch a show at the kid-friendly venue, Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. Or, rent a pedal boat from Cape Fear River Watch on Greenfield Lake. Snag a morning rental for best wildlife viewing. You’re sure to see lots of alligators, turtles, fish, and birds.
5. Kick back at Topsail Island Brewing. Wait, isn’t this a “with kids” post? Yes. But Topsail Island Brewing has ample outdoor space for kiddos to play and stretch their legs. If you want a brewery setting without having to worry too much that your kids are being kids, this is a fantastic option. Be mindful, of course, that your kiddos will need to be supervised, but they are very welcoming of families and are even expanding their outdoor space with littles in mind.
Well, I’ve reached my five and found myself wanting to share so much more with you. Stay tuned for a part two!
Cheers,
Ashton
